MR AND MRS INABA
2005
Oil on canvas
40x50cm
Kei-Ichiro and Akiko Inaba, the sitters of this portrait, are from Japan. As a tribute to their nationality, their faces are inscribed in the circle of the beautiful Japanese flag.
In the Japanese language the flag is called "Hinomaru" which means 'circle of the sun', therefore Akiko's hair resembles sunbeams. Kei-Ichiro, as though he were a modern shogun, is crowned with a small rice plant, in the fashion of a laurel-crowned Caesar. In fact, his family name, Inaba, means "rice leaf".
