WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF HISTORY? reflects on history as a discipline deriving from the 'obsession' of man to record and remember.
It is said that to understand one's future, one needs to know one's past. While this is may be wise thinking, the risk is that one may also believe that one's past dictates one's future, too.
The clock at the centre of the webpage represents the present. At the same time the smaller digit at its foot is (metaphorically) the 'sum total' of the present experience, as the figure of the hours are added to the figure of the minutes and then to that of the seconds.
Through the buttons at the bottom of the page we can contrast the sum total of the past as well as of the future, realizing that they are not equal. So, if the sum totals are not the same, what follows is that the present is not necessarily determined and conditioned by the past nor is the future by the present.
This may be counterintuitive thinking, consistent to which is the background that constantly flows at the back of it all. It stands for the eternity of the time and on this backdrop are details of a man deconstructed and disconnected as deconstructed and disconnected is the time of this alternative understanding.
Notions of fate versus free will are also alluded to here.
